Elleski Moment – Minecraft Race for Wool

Welcome to community game night! Excited to have you.

This first time around, we're going to play an old team-based Minecraft gamemode called Race for Wool (RFW). In it, two teams compete on parallel floating obstacle courses, earning differently colored wool blocks as they complete challenges. Teams win matches by collecting and assembling all pieces of colored wool at a scoring podium, often alternating between fighting monsters and firing arrows at their opponents in the process. The map’s mirrored, cross-section design allows players to use the enemy lane as a map to their own territory, uncovering caches of hidden ore and secret pathways in the process. In short, it's a fun way to play Minecraft no matter how familiar you are with the game’s mechanics!

The server we're using requires Minecraft 1.8.9, so I've created a custom instance for Prism Launcher that sets everything up in as few clicks as possible.

Installation should take around 5–10 minutes, with an equal amount of time dedicated to configuring game settings to your liking.

Installation

First, download the latest release of Prism Launcher and complete the installation process. Once the install is complete, go ahead and open it.

You will be prompted to log into your Minecraft account.

Once you're logged in, you'll be greeted with an empty window inviting you to create a new instance. Next, we'll add the custom Prism Launcher instance I've prepared.

Now we'll download my custom Prism Launcher instance. Once the download is complete, drag the .zip file into the Prism Launcher window. Click "OK" when prompted.

You should now see an instance named elleski moment appear in the Ungrouped section. We're mostly done!

Next, let's ensure that this instance is using the correct version of Java. Right-click the elleski moment instance and select Edit... to bring up the instance settings menu.

Once you're here, click Settings on the right-hand sidebar, then open the Java tab in the main pane. We first want to check if the Java 1.8 is installed, then enable it for the instance if possible. Click Detect, then look for a version of Java that has a gold star next to it (⭐) — if you have one, select it and click Ok.

If you don't see a gold star, don't panic! We'll fix it in the next step!

For those without Java 1.8 installed, close the Detect pop-up window and instead click on Open Java Downloader. Make sure you're on the Mojang tab, then select the version of Java 1.8 that appears and click Download.

You've now successfully downloaded the correct version of Java and added it to the instance. Close out the overall settings menu and double-click the instance to start the game!

Playing the game

Opening the elleski moment instance will automatically connect you to play.wool.run, the only community server that exists for playing Race for Wool maps. Feel free to run around and try things out.

When we gather for community game night, you'll need to know three main commands:

/joinmatch [name] - This will allow you to join a public match. In practice, you'll use /joinmatch bonkposting to join my lobby.

/join - This allows you to randomly join one of two teams. You can also specify a team name, though team names are not the same on every map; check the chat after joining a lobby to see what's available.

/ready - Use this once your entire team is ready to play. Once both teams have readied up, the match will begin and both sides will be dropped into the map.

I hope this helps!
